Self-Portrait with Straw Hat, 1887
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
Oil on Canvas on Pasteboard, 42 X 30 cm
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
(Vincent van Gogh Stichting)
F 524

The brushstrokes in this sketchy portrait are free and loose, barely touching each other. The light, sunny colors and the broad-brimmed straw hat have often led to the assumption that it was painted in Arles. It was in fact created during a Parisian winter, not long before his departure to the sunlit south.
